This participation comes at a historic moment for the sector, which is close to reaching 3 billion Euros in turnover, with exports making up 50% of this figure. “Our estimates suggest that in 2018 we reached 1.5 billion Euros in exports for the first time ever”, reveals the president of Portugal Fresh, Gonçalo Santos Andrade, highlighting the data made available thus far by the National Institute of Statistics. Between January and November last year, exports of fruits, vegetables and flowers hit 1.372 billion Euros, increasing by 1% compared to the same time the previous year. “This growth is proof of the great skill and perseverance of national businesses faced with the countless setbacks recorded during the difficult agricultural year that was 2018. Managing to reach 1.5 billion Euros at this time is something that fills us with pride”, adds the official.
In the same vein, sales to Germany were worth 89.4 million Euros in the first 11 months of 2018 – up by 1.3% compared to the same period in 2017. Steady growth since 2015 and the results of the partnerships established with associates in the market, including the retail group LIDL, have allowed the sale of national fruits and vegetables in German supermarkets. The largest European economy, with 83 million inhabitants, is now the fifth largest buyer of Portuguese fruits and vegetables.
The presence of Portugal Fresh at what is considered the ‘world cup’ of fruits and vegetables, to which the Minister for Agriculture, Luís Capoulas dos Santos, will attend, will help strengthen ties, not only with the German market and with the most common partners, but also with buyers from increasingly relevant regions in the sector’s world sales, such as China, India and Indonesia. “Buyers from five different continents will be in attendance. Our more traditional partners, such as Spain, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Brazil will also spend a lot of time at our stand, tasting products and meeting with export companies”, states Gonçalo Santos Andrade.
Spain, France, the UK, the Netherlands and Germany make up the Top 5 largest markets for national exports. Together, these five markets represent 67% of the sector’s total exports.
Aside from external promotion, Portugal Fresh’s mission is to promote the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the national market. In 2018, another 14 companies from the industry became associates of Portugal Fresh, which now has 85 associate companies representing 25% of the value of the fruit, vegetables and flowers sector.
